Karzai to visit Pentagon next week

Afghan President Hamid Karzai will visit the Pentagon on Thursday, during his working visit to Washington, the E-Ring has learned.

Karzai is expected to arrive in Washington on Monday to meet with President Obama and other officials, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, for high-level talks about the future of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

There is speculation that Obama and Karzai could announce future U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan during his visit. Beyond that, there is much to discuss, including whether Afghanistan will grant American troops stationed there in the future immunity from Afghan laws, and the pace by which Afghan detainees are being released from prisons as Americans relinquish control over them.

Karzai will receive "special honors" upon his arrival at the Pentagon, a defense official said. "Secretary Panetta and President Karzai will also visit the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial to honor and remember the 184 people who lost their lives at the Pentagon when Al Qaeda attacked the United States more than 11 years ago," the official said.
