Bidens visit Pentagon

Vice President Joe Biden made an unannounced appearance in the Pentagon briefing room on Monday to join in a short ceremony announcing the name of the Navy’s next Virginia-class submarine: the USS Delaware.

The real Biden onstage, however was the vice president’s wife, Jill Biden, who is the ship’s official sponsor. Every Navy ship has a semi-famous woman behind it as an official caretaker of its crew.

Posing with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, Mrs. Biden waved her uncharacteristically camera-shy husband onstage to join the class picture. Construction on the new boat will begin in 2013 and is expected to be completed within five years.

"Our men and women in uniform and their families represent the very best of America, and wherever the Delaware goes, it will take with it the strength, resilience, and bravery of military families in Delaware and across the country," she said.

The vice president later stopped to shake hands with one soldier who said "Congratulations, sir," to the newly reelected Biden, hoping for a picture in the E-Ring hallway. “Meet my commander,” said Biden, introducing his wife. Biden smiled broadly but security officials had already informed onlookers that no pictures of the vice president were permitted.

This is still the E-Ring, after all.
